Isocarboxazid, also known as Marplan is a prescription only medication used to depression including anxiety, panic disorder, and certain phobias. It is suggested that Marplan be tried if a patient’s previous medication has been unsuccessful in managing their symptoms.
Marplan claims to work by altering three chemicals in the brain, serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, while other medications only work with the serotonin and norepinephrine chemicals.
Marplan’s active ingredient is isocaboxazid which is a monoamine oxidise inhibitor that inhibits the activity of the monoamine enzyme in the brain.
Inactive ingredients in this medication include; lactose, corn starch, povidone, and coloring agents D&C Red No. 27 and FD&C Yellow No. 6, as well as magnesium stearate. Because the medication contains lactose, patients that are lactose intolerant are advised to avoid this medication.
Marplan is available in 10 mg tablets. Patients are started on 10 mg per day with gradual increased of 10-20 mg every 2-4 days. In clinical trials, 40 mg was suggested as being the preferred maintenance level with very few patients needing more than 60 mg per day.
Unlike AnxiClear which doesn’t have any known side effects or interactions with other medication, Marplan does. More importantly, many patients will have to change their dietary routine as Isocaboxazid reacts with many food products.

Marplan has many adverse side effects. Aside from typical prescription medication side effects, the interaction with many different types of food may make this medication very inconvenient for many patients. The cost of the medication is another important factor as it may simply cost far too much for many people.
